Myopia Management

OC Optometry Group

Optometrists located in Newport Beach, CA

Nearsightedness, also called myopia, is becoming increasingly common in children. While glasses and standard contact lenses can help your child see clearly, they do not always address the bigger concern: myopia can continue to worsen as a child grows.

At OC Optometry Group in Newport Beach, we offer myopia management for children and teens. Our goal is to help slow the progression of myopia and support your child’s long-term eye health throughout Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Newport Coast, Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Laguna Beach.

Myopia Management in Newport Beach for Children and Teens

Slow Your Child’s Nearsightedness. Protect Their Future Vision

Myopia, also called nearsightedness, often gets worse as children grow. While regular glasses help your child see clearly, myopia management is designed to help slow how quickly their prescription changes over time.

At OC Optometry Group in Newport Beach, we offer personalized myopia management for children and teens from Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Newport Coast, Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Laguna Beach.

More Than Just Stronger Glasses

When a child’s prescription keeps increasing year after year, it may be a sign that their eyes are continuing to grow too long. Myopia management focuses on slowing that progression, not just correcting blurry distance vision.

The earlier myopia is identified and managed, the more opportunity we have to support your child’s long-term eye health.

Is Your Child Showing Signs of Myopia?

Your child may be nearsighted if they squint to see far away, sit close to the TV, hold books or screens close to their face, complain of headaches, or struggle to see the board at school.

If you have noticed these signs, a myopia management evaluation can help determine whether your child would benefit from treatment.

Custom Myopia Control Options

Every child is different. Our doctors evaluate your child’s prescription, age, eye health, lifestyle, family history, and rate of progression before recommending a treatment plan.

Our myopia management options may include Stellest glasses, Ortho-K, myopia control soft contact lenses, low-dose atropine eye drops, or a combination approach.

Stellest Glasses for Myopia Control

Stellest glasses are advanced spectacle lenses designed to correct your child’s vision while also helping slow myopia progression. They can be a great option for children who are not ready for contact lenses or who prefer a glasses-based treatment.

The FDA authorized marketing of Essilor Stellest eyeglass lenses to correct myopia and slow progression in children ages 6 to 12 at treatment initiation.

Ortho-K: Clear Vision Without Daytime Glasses

Ortho-K lenses are custom contact lenses worn overnight while your child sleeps. The lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye so many children can see clearly during the day without glasses or daytime contacts.

Ortho-K may be a strong option for active children who play sports, swim, or prefer freedom from daytime eyewear.

Myopia Control Contact Lenses

Special soft contact lenses for myopia control are designed to correct your child’s vision while also helping slow myopia progression. These lenses are typically worn during the day and may be a good option for responsible children and teens who are ready for contact lens wear.

Our doctors will determine whether your child is a good candidate and provide training on safe lens handling and care.

Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops

Low-dose atropine eye drops may be recommended for some children as part of a myopia management plan. These drops are typically used at bedtime and may be considered for children whose myopia is progressing quickly or who need additional support.

Research on atropine concentration and effectiveness is still evolving, so our doctors will discuss whether atropine is appropriate for your child’s specific situation. The National Eye Institute has noted mixed findings across studies, including that very low-dose atropine 0.01% was not better than placebo in one U.S. trial, while other research continues to study different concentrations.

Advanced Technology. Personalized Monitoring.

Myopia management is not a one-time visit. Our Newport Beach office uses advanced diagnostic technology to monitor your child’s prescription, eye health, and progression over time.

These measurements help us track whether treatment is working and make adjustments when needed.
